Improper Bandaging of Toddler’s Hand Resulting in Disfigurement
Columbia, SC -- Mr. Fulda and Mr. Whetstone were successful in representing a toddler whose hand became permanently deformed after it was wrapped too tightly by an emergency room resident. The child initially presented to the emergency room because his little finger on the right hand got caught in the hinged side of a closing house door. The emergency room resident used Dermabond to close the cut and then wrapped the young boy’s entire hand in Kerlix. After following up with their pediatrician as scheduled, the parents discovered that the young boy's hand had been wrapped too tightly. The child’s hand received burn-like injuries and, among other things, is now different in size from the other hand. The vast majority of the $375,000 medical malpractice settlement was placed in an annuity to be paid to the young boy when he reaches college age and beyond.
